Fostering Innovation and Collaboration: Airlangga University and COMSTECH Science Technology Parks (STPs) Establishment

In an era characterized by rapid technological advancements, collaboration and knowledge exchange have become integral components of innovation. Universitas Airlangga, a renowned institution in Indonesia, and COMSTECH (The Organization of Islamic Cooperation’s Standing Committee on Scientific and Technological Cooperation) have joined forces to establish an inspiring international partnership that leverages science and technology parks for training and workshops. The Workshop began on September 04-05, 2023, specifically took place in ASEEC Tower, Airlangga University, Surabaya, Indonesia. This event was attended by many representatives both from Universitas Airlangga and COMSTECH. Opened by Prof. Dr. Ni Nyoman Tri Puspaningsih, M.Si which stated that discussion regarding science and techno park and also university contribution is important. Not only workshop training, but also expertise from the delegation, Universitas Airlangga. The main goal of this collaboration is to have agreement collaboration and commercialisation of the product.

The science and technology parks initiated through this partnership serve as dynamic hubs of creativity and innovation. These parks are equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, cutting-edge laboratories, and a vast network of experts from various disciplines. This ideal environment encourages cross-disciplinary collaboration, enabling diverse groups of researchers, academicians, and entrepreneurs to come together to address complex global challenges. The collaboration between Airlangga University and COMSTECH’s international training and workshops go beyond traditional boundaries. It is proven by the statement of Prof. Dr. Ni Nyoman Tri Puspaningsih, M.Si, “Universitas Airlangga personally pays attention to the Madura people because of their uniqueness as community characteristics. Maduranese have strong characters which are very passionate towards entrepreneurship. Universitas Airlangga has community development programs in Madura Island”. To support this innovation program, R&D funds through the 747 scheme which is around 1% of GDP until 2024 is needed. The increase in R&D funds can be realized gradually based on the government’s capacity, and also SOE’s and private participation. STP developed with so many advantages. STP already took place in Universitas Airlangga in Technical Services and Healthcare Services Unit, Innovation & Technology Development Unit, Business Incubator and Accelerator, also Business Development and Teaching Industry.

The training and workshop programs are not exclusively designed for established professionals; they also serve as vital platforms for nurturing the next generation of innovators by more than 200 industrial partners. They offer educational initiatives, internships, and mentorship opportunities for students, providing them with a bridge between academia and industry. This hands-on experience equips students with the skills and knowledge required to tackle real-world challenges.

The partnership between Universitas Airlangga and COMSTECH’s international training and workshops epitomizes the immense potential of international collaboration and the pivotal role of science and technology in addressing global challenges. One of the objectives is to capture a part of the global aviation market. Evolve a strategy to create an enabling environment based on the existing capabilities/expertise and by filling-in gaps in the capabilities, technologies and training regimens. It also discusses the pre-incubation, incubation, and graduation of the deep-tech startups. As the world grapples with complex issues, this collaboration stands as a beacon of hope, illustrating how universities and international organizations can work together to drive innovation and create a brighter future for all.
