The spirit of cross-border collaboration came alive at 2 Junior High School (SMPN) Tosari Satu Atap, Pasuruan, as the World University Association of Community Development (WUACD), in partnership with Universitas Airlangga through Ministry of Community Service of Student Executive Board and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia through student partners from Kolej Rahman Putra, Malaysia, organized a Resin Craft Making Workshop. This activity marked the third session of the community service program, aiming to nurture both creativity and entrepreneurial awareness among junior high school students.
In this hands-on session, the junior high students were guided by Kolej Rahman Putra students to create resin keychains, beginning from mixing the resin safely, adding color pigments and decorative materials, pouring the mixture into molds, and finally producing their very own unique accessories. Beyond the creative experience, the session emphasized entrepreneurial thinking and showed students how their creations could hold economic value if marketed properly. This is crucial to build their knowledge, so that in the future they are already equipped with the necessary skills and can contribute to local economic development.
The program held at 2 Junior High School (SMPN) Tosari Satu Atap underlined the importance of developing an entrepreneurial mindset at an early age through framing resin crafting as a potential micro-enterprise. Through the program, students were encouraged to look at their keychains not only as personal art projects but also as products that could be responsibly designed, produced, and distributed within their communities. This perspective highlighted how creativity, when paired with business awareness, could contribute to economic empowerment. In addition, the initiative also supported the goals of SDG 4 (Quality Education) by promoting practical and real-life-based learning through entrepreneurship. By encouraging students with this activity, the program laid the foundation for responsible and innovative future contributors to their local economies from an early age. Therefore, they could be more responsible for their consumption and the knowledge of valuing money.
From those activities, the program also reflected a strong alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production, in the way facilitators stressed sustainable approaches in crafting, such as efficient material usage, waste reduction, and environmentally conscious production processes. In doing so, the workshop connected practical skill-building with the broader global agenda of sustainability.
Students from both institutions worked together to design and facilitate the workshop, providing opportunities for cross-cultural learning and demonstrating how global cooperation can enrich local community development. The partnership demonstrated the implementation of SDG 17 which encourages working together and sharing knowledge, skills, and resources to support long-term community growth and sustainability. Furthermore, it also shows how higher education institutions can bridge knowledge, culture, and innovation across borders.
Through this initiative, students of 2 Junior High School (SMPN) Tosari Satu Atap gained meaningful experiences that combined technical skills, creative expression, sustainability, and entrepreneurship. The resin keychains produced during the workshop stood as more than decorative objects. They became symbols of new opportunities for innovation, economic creativity, and responsible production, empowering students to imagine a brighter future.
This workshop was not the end, but part of a continuous effort. Upcoming sessions will introduce other creative and practical activities. Through these programs, UNAIR, Kolej Rahman Putra UTM, and WUACD aim to leave a lasting impact, preparing young learners to grow with creativity, entrepreneurship, and sustainability in mind.
