On August 26 2023, WUACD Universitas Airlangga conducted a community development collaboration with Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. This activity contains various things to empower local communities and also preserve natural resources. One of the activities carried out took place at Kim Kim River. This river located in Pasir Gudang, Johor Bahru, is used to be a vital watercourse known for its ecological significance. However, in 2019, there was an incident where illegal chemical waste was dumped in Sungai Kim Kim. This caused the river to emit toxic fumes, impacting approximately 6,000 people and causing thousands to be hospitalized.

In efforts to protect the vulnerable Kim Kim River ecosystem, UNAIR visited UTM’s project which involved in the initiatives called University Social Responsibility (USR) that can be seen. The Penta Helix model, which brings together business, academia, government, civil society, and individuals, has been used to great effect in these initiatives. Through this collective endeavor, UTM is actively contributing to the realization of Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6), which seeks to ensure the availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all. This initiative from UTM not only demonstrates the commitment of these institutions to social and environmental responsibility but also sets a commendable example for future endeavors in preserving and rejuvenating vital ecosystems.
