Located in Kampong Selayang, in the city of Kuala Lumpur, lies PSPK, an NGO dedicated to transforming lives through community service. PSPK stands for Perkhidmatan Sosial Pembangunan Komuniti, established on 4th July 2006 from the initiation of Henry Sadnam, a local resident who is deeply concerned about the rising number of youngsters involved in drug trafficking. In the multicultural community with vibrant diverse cultures, consisting of the Indian majority and the Chinese and Malaysian minorities, Mr. Sadnam had a vision to create a holistic community that embodies sustainability and resilience, transcending barriers of race and creed. On May 24th the participants of Community Development at Universiti Kuala Lumpur had the opportunity to visit PSPK and witness firsthand the incredible work they do. Focusing on providing Baking Training, Sewing Training, Computer Learning, Melayu Language Learning, and Plastic Waste Management, the success of these programs would not have been possible without the help of their sponsors who generously offered support and involvement to empower those in need.
Not only focusing on teaching, the Baking Training program instills a sense of confidence and independence in their trainees from selling the products that they produce. The program is open to anyone eager to learn and equip themselves with practical skills in baking. Upon completion, the trainees will be able to transform their knowledge and skills to start their own businesses or secure jobs in the field.
Next, we visited the sewing training center, a bright and crowded room filled with sewing equipment and colorful fabrics. PSPK provides a comprehensive curriculum starting from the basic to advanced techniques and patterns. Having awareness of the importance in empowering women and youth with underprivileged and uneducated backgrounds, this program will enable their trainees to achieve financial independence.
In the computer learning center, we were struck by the airy room of a modern facility equipped with some of the latest modern technologies. Students of all ages are welcome to join this program. As we live in the digital age, digital literacy is crucial. Therefore, PSPK aimed to ensure that their community members are not left behind and able to open the door full of better opportunities.
Addressing the emergence of environmental issues, perhaps the most innovative aspect of PSPK’s work is its plastic waste management program. Through this program trainees are taught how to transform plastic waste into useful products. In the process, we saw plastic bottles melted and shaped into house furniture and decorative items. The program aimed to educate the younger generation on the importance of recycling and environmental stewardship. Aside from that, the Plastic Bank innovation also offers a unique approach to dealing with plastic waste. Through an exchange system, the community members collect plastic trash and bring it to the collection points, where they receive points in return. The goal is to foster a culture of sustainability and economic opportunity within communities.
