Optimizing the Production and Quality of Livestock in Timor Leste

The human capital is an essential aspect in determining the success and prosperity of the community. Each individual must be able to enhance their attributes and skill in order to not only contribute to society but to work together to ensure the outcome is suitable for the development of human life. Various industries and services range from different fields of study which require adequate and sufficient knowledge that each member of the community must be educated on to execute their tasks accordingly. It is crucial for the community to be guided and supplied proper skills and competencies that could aid them in improving their work and livelihood. One of the ways in doing so is through community development, such as was executed in Dili, the capital city of Timor-Leste.

From the collaboration between the Indonesian Embassy in Timor Leste and Universidade Nacional Timor Lorosa’e, the community development in Dili’s intention is to increase the welfare and wellbeing of the people as well as elevate their capabilities while also fulfilling the aims of SDG by doing so. The event is held from October 13 to October 20 2022, with topics that range from numerous areas of life and different activities. 16 delegates from Universitas Airlangga attended the event. One of the fields that is concerned in the event is regarding veterinary medicine, more specifically the condition of livestock. 

The livestock industry is among the industries that not only help to supply employment opportunities, but also a tremendous part of the economy. In accordance with SDG 8 “Decent Work and Economic Growth”, the event held seminars and workshops regarding the betterment of livestock aimed for veterinarians and inseminators. On the first day of the community development, 13 October, two seminars were held on this topic, with one titled “Overcoming reproductive system problems” and “Artificial Insemination and Ultrasound  Technology for livestock”. The seminars gave informative understanding and awareness on the subject and expanded the participant’s comprehension on the issues regarding reproduction in livestock and the method for reproduction. The next day, 14 October, a workshop that taught the subject and practice of Biotechnology, concerning stem cells and veterinary reproduction, followed by the application of products from bees, stem cells, and the reproductive section of veterinary. The workshop is able to help the participants understand more practically and in-depth on the execution of the information that is given and how to apply it.
