SUMMARY:Waste to Wealth 2026
DESCRIPTION:The impact of climate change\, one of the sources of which is greenhouse gases\, is already very much felt\, where one of the main sources comes from waste. Therefore\, efforts are needed to reduce waste generation through proper management\, including recycling waste as part of climate action . The importance of good waste management is key to minimizing the emergence of greenhouse gases\, as well as being a solution to the limited landfill space. On the other hand\, the increase in waste volume that is not balanced with optimal management also contributes to high greenhouse gas emissions from the waste sector\, especially methane (CH₄)\, carbon dioxide (CO₂)\, and nitrous oxide (N₂O)\, which play a major role in accelerating global warming. In addition\, the contribution from the industrial sector\, also through industrial greenhouse gas emissions\, further exacerbates the condition. This impact triggers increasingly uncontrolled climate change\, which then leads to environmental damage\, pollution\, and an increased risk of various diseases due to changes in environmental conditions. Therefore\, the Waste to Wealth concept is a strategic solution to minimize the impact of climate change.\n \n\n In response to these problems\, climate change adaptation and mitigation efforts are needed starting from the source\, one of which is through wise waste management. This approach is realized through the concept of “Waste to Wealth”\, namely efforts to convert waste into valuable resources\, both economically and socially\, while reducing negative impacts on the environment. In order to prepare the adaptation and mitigation action indicators for ProKlim (Community Program for Climate) in 2026 in accordance with the Decree of the Minister of Environment and Forestry No. 1679 of 2024 and to strengthen the capacity of environmental cadres\, the East Java Provincial Environmental Agency in collaboration with WUACD and LPMB Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) held a socialization for prospective ProKlim locations regarding the concept of integrated waste management\, which focuses on processing technology from upstream to downstream to convert waste into products with economic value\, energy\, or raw materials\, while increasing the economic value of waste and reducing the impact of environmental pollution.\n \n\n In order to support these efforts\, the International Conference on Community Development (Comdev) was held with the theme “Waste to Wealth 2026”. This activity brought together various stakeholders\, as a concrete step in reducing source-based greenhouse gas emissions. This conference presented keynote speakers\, namely Prof. Muhammad Miftahussurur\, dr.\, M.Kes.\, Sp.PD-KGEH.\, Ph.D.\, FINASIM as Chairperson of WUACD\, as well as main speakers consisting of Prof. Dr. Ni Nyoman Tri Puspaningsih\, M.Si as Secretary of WUACD Airlangga University\, H. Subandi\, SH\, M.Kn. (Regent of Sidoarjo)\, and Prof. Hery Purnobasuki\, M.Si.\, Ph.D as Chairperson of LPMB Airlangga University. The speakers included: Prof. Dr. Ni Nyoman Tri Puspaningsih\, M.Si. (Airlangga University\, Indonesia); Prof. Dr. Jamia Azdina Binti Jamal (National University of Malaysia\, Malaysia); Dr. Sohom Roy (Picarro Inc.\, United States); Moch. Hadi Khustanto\, ST (PT. Dwitura Mitra Sejahtera\, Indonesia); Prof. Dr. Firdaus Mohamad Hamzah (National University of Malaysia\, Malaysia); Christopher Dick-Sagoe\, Ph.D. (University of Botswana\, Botswana); Rahmat Hidayat\, SE (BUMDES Gemilang Ketajen\, Indonesia); Prof. Datu Buyung Agusdinata (Arizona State University\, United States); Ir. Dr. Azimah Ismail (Sultan Zainal Abidin University\, Malaysia); Rania Naura Anindhita\, B.Sc. (The Young Generation\, Indonesia); Assoc. Prof. Dr. Azlan Abas ( National University of Malaysia\, Malaysia); Soejono MJ\, MBA (Community of Mutiara Berkah Berseri\, Indonesia); and ChM. Dr. Munirah binti Abdul Zali (Waste Technology and Environment Division\, Malaysian Nuclear Agency). Moderators in each breakout room\, namely: Breakout Room 1 guided by Assoc. Prof. Dr. R. Azizah\, SH\, M.Kes.; Breakout Room 2 by Dr. Mahmud Aditya Rifqi\, S.Gz.\, M.Si.; Breakout Room 3 by Dr. Retno Andriyani\, ST\, M.Kes.; and Breakout Room 4 by Dr. Sudarmaji\, S.KM.\, M.Kes. COMDEV Waste to Wealth is chaired by Assoc. Prof. Dr. R. Azizah\, SH\, M.Kes.\, together with the HIMA S2KL FKM UNAIR team.\n \n\n The efforts to address the problem of urban waste at this conference emphasized the importance of cross-sector collaboration through a hexahelix approach\, involving universities\, government\, non-governmental organizations\, industry\, communities\, and the media. This synergy is expected to strengthen sustainable promotional and preventive efforts in reducing greenhouse gas emissions\, thereby achieving the shared goal of maintaining a healthy earth\, in line with the motto: “Healthy Earth\, and the Earth will make us healthy.” https://ehclimate.org/
