As part of the BBK International Program at Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT), students from Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) engaged in a series of academic and experiential learning activities that highlighted education, research, and innovation across diverse disciplines. The program, which combined public lectures, classroom-based learning, and field exposure, offered participants a holistic mobility experience and contributed to the advancement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), SDG 14 (Life Below Water), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
One of the key educational highlights was a Public Lecture by Dr. Anak Agung Gde Satia Utama on Netnography Research, held on July 27, 2025, at Dewan Persidangan 1, UMTCC. Netnography, a qualitative research method for studying online communities through an ethnographic lens, was introduced to the participants as an essential approach for understanding cultural and social interactions in the digital space. Dr. Anak Agung demonstrated the use of the NVivo application in processing data gathered from YouTube, guiding students to identify recurring themes and sentiments among netizens. This lecture provided students with a practical perspective on digital ethnography and its relevance to contemporary social research.
The academic exchange continued with a student activity under the Policy Studies Program on August 4, 2025, at the Faculty of Management and Economics (FPEPS). Facilitated by Dr. Norfatiha Oathman, the session introduced the concept of community management and was followed by case-based group presentations. Divided into teams, students examined real community issues, identified problems, proposed solutions, and creatively presented slogans to represent their ideas. Through this activity, participants gained a deeper understanding of community development and problem-solving, while also practicing teamwork and communication skills.
Beyond classroom sessions, students also participated in RV Discoveries, a hands-on learning experience aboard a research vessel at Duyong Marina, Kuala Terengganu, on August 5, 2025. The vessel, equipped with advanced radar and visual observation systems, provided participants with exposure to marine exploration and field research techniques. Students practiced radar navigation and remote ocean observation, enhancing their practical knowledge of marine surveying, data collection, and the application of modern maritime technology to research.
On the same day, participants visited the Centre for Fundamental Research in Renewable Energy (CEFORE) site at Tok Jembal. Here, they were introduced to an innovative renewable electricity generation system combining wind turbines and solar panels, producing sufficient energy to power the entire complex. Students observed the technical design, maintenance process, and energy conversion mechanisms, gaining valuable insight into sustainable energy practices in maritime environments. This experience not only demonstrated the importance of renewable energy solutions but also inspired students to consider future research and innovation in clean energy technologies.
Through these academic engagements, BBK International at Universiti Malaysia Terengganu successfully blended theory and practice, enabling UNAIR students to gain both intellectual and experiential learning. The integration of classroom lectures, case studies, field exposure, and research exploration underscored the program’s commitment to equipping participants with skills and knowledge relevant to global challenges. More importantly, the activities strengthened the educational partnership between Universitas Airlangga and Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, reinforcing their shared mission to cultivate globally minded, socially responsible future leaders.
