The Consulate General Republic Indonesia, situated in the lively city of Johor Bahru, Malaysia, acted as a respected symbol of Indonesian representation for the Johor Bahru region. This diplomatic center had a significant impact on developing a strong framework for migrant development, focusing on ensuring quality and enhancing security. Its strategic location in the heart of Johor Bahru made it a crucial destination, fostering bilateral cooperation and community involvement. The inauguration of the Consulate General Republic Indonesia on April 29th, 2024, marked a noteworthy milestone in cross-border relations. The opening ceremony featured a speech by Mr. Sigit Suryantoro Widianto, the distinguished representative, who provided a detailed overview of the migrant situation in Malaysia. He emphasized the importance of strengthening security measures and facilitating the smooth transfer of migrants from Indonesia to various destinations, especially Malaysia. In line with this vision, the Consulate General Republic Indonesia pledged its commitment to supporting educational initiatives tailored to migrant workers’ needs, using socialization and mentorship to empower them.
At the same time, a symposium took place within the Consulate General Republic Indonesia, led by representatives from prestigious academic institutions. Dr. Pratiwi Soesilawati from Universitas Airlangga, Yusron Sugiarto from Universitas Brawijaya, and Dr. Hary Suswanto from Universitas Negeri Malang collaborated to facilitate an intellectual discourse that transcended institutional boundaries. This collaboration strengthened partnerships and fostered a network of scholarly exchange and collaboration, offering numerous opportunities for academic enrichment. Moreover, inherent to institutional partnerships, Universitas Airlangga initiated efforts to support students’ holistic development by collaborating with the International Student Association of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (PPI UTM). Through this collaboration, students had the chance to immerse themselves in diverse cultural experiences, enriching their academic pursuits with a global perspective. Guided by PPI UTM, students and faculty explored UTM’s academic ecosystem through a campus tour.
As the day drew to a close, a grand banquet, organized in collaboration with UTM, showcased traditional songs and dances, fostering cultural exchange and camaraderie. Looking back, this event marked the beginning of a new era in community development at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, paving the way for transformative initiatives and collaborative projects.
