The World University Association for Community Development (WUACD) continues its BBK International program at Federation University, Australia, with a focus on addressing healthcare disparities. This year’s program aims to deepen participants’ understanding of healthcare systems, medical practices, and technological innovations that enhance accessibility and efficiency. Through university visits, industrial site tours, healthcare observations, and community interactions, participants gain valuable insights while also engaging in cultural exchange with Indigenous communities and diverse social groups. This initiative not only expands their knowledge but also fosters professional growth and cultural appreciation, aligning with the principles of international collaboration and the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
On January 28, 2025, students from Universitas Airlangga visited the Latrobe Valley Industrial Sector, gaining firsthand insight into industrial operations, sustainability practices, and innovation in economic development. This visit laid the foundation for understanding the broader infrastructure that supports Australia’s healthcare system. Following this, the students engaged in a series of healthcare education activities, including an exploration of the country’s dental care system, a visit to Ambulance Victoria to observe pre-hospital emergency services, and hands-on learning at Telehealth and Physiotherapy facilities. Their experience was further deepened through a lecture on public health and a community engagement session at WES, an initiative under the Latrobe Health Innovation Zone, offering valuable perspectives on the integration of health and social welfare in the Australian context. This program aligned with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure, as it promoted inclusive and sustainable industrial development through direct exposure to real-world industrial practices in the Latrobe Valley. By showcasing how local industries integrate sustainability and innovation into their operations, the visit encouraged critical discussions on economic development, infrastructure planning, and technological advancement. Through this, participants not only gained academic insights but also developed a deeper appreciation for how industrial sectors can drive progress in health, education, and broader community well-being.
Besides gaining new knowledge and experience in global partnerships for healthcare and education, cultural immersion also played a crucial role in the program. Participants interacted with indigenous communities at Warrigunya, where they learned about Aboriginal history, traditions, and employment programs, fostering a deeper appreciation for cultural diversity and social inclusion. Visits to heritage sites such as Walhalla and the Churchill Hub further enriched their understanding of Australia’s cultural landscape through experiential learning. Additionally, the visit to Phillip Island enhanced their awareness of wildlife conservation and sustainable tourism, emphasizing the importance of environmental education. These activities collectively supported Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4: Quality Education by providing inclusive and transformative learning experiences that promoted respect for cultural heritage, environmental responsibility, and lifelong learning beyond the classroom.
Beyond individual learning and community engagement, the WUACD BBK Internasional in Federation University program embodies the spirit of SDG 17: Partnership for the Goals by fostering collaboration across academic institutions, industries, healthcare sectors, and local communities. Through its engagements with the lecturers and students from Federation University, industrial partners, and Indigenous communities, the program strengthens international cooperation, emphasizing the value of shared knowledge and cross-sector collaboration in addressing global challenges. By uniting diverse stakeholders in education, healthcare, and sustainability efforts, the program not only equips participants with academic and professional insights but also cultivates a lasting network of global changemakers committed to building a more inclusive, sustainable, and resilient world.
