Participants of the BBK International in Federation University held by World University Association for Community Development (WUACD) took part in an insightful urban exploration and community engagement initiative at the Churchill Hub Center in Federation University, Australia, on January 30, 2025. This agenda provided an opportunity to delve into local community development and understand the role of public services in fostering sustainable communities.
During their visit to Churchill Hub, participants engaged with local residents and were given the opportunity to observe its role in providing essential public services and community development initiatives. They were also guided on a tour of the facility to explore various community programs and discussed with Churchill Hub Representatives to understand the challenges and successes in promoting sustainable community growth. These activities align with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and Goal 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities).
On February 1, 2025, the participants went to Melbourne for another immersive urban exploration experience. Through a self-guided tour, participants visited key urban and cultural landmarks such as Federation Square, the Royal Botanic Gardens, and Southbank Promenade. These visits provided participants with firsthand experience in sustainable city planning and the importance of cultural diversity in urban development. Additionally, the experienced Melbourne’s renowned tram and train system serves as a model for sustainable transport.
One of the highlights of the exploration was the contrast between historical sites like Flinders Street Station and modern developments such as Docklands, offering a deeper understanding of urban planning strategies. Participants also engaged in Melbourne’s cultural scene by exploring local markets, public art installations, and museums that reflect the city’s rich multicultural identity and community development initiatives. The visit allowed participants to reflect on how modern cities balance economic growth with historical and cultural preservation.
The participants gained valuable insights into how community engagement and urban planning enhance the sustainability and livability of modern cities. Through hands-on experiences and discussions with community representatives, the program underscored the importance of integrating sustainability into urban and community planning. The experience concluded with participants equipped with practical knowledge and a deeper understanding of sustainable urban development.
