As part of strengthening collaboration in education and community service, World University Association (WUACD), in collaboration with Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT), held Belajar Bersama Komunitas (BBK) International program. The program featured several activities designed by the students of Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) to improve aspects such as health quality, entrepreneurship, and environmental awareness. From July 26 to August 9, 2025, students of Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) actively participated in creating and implementing these activities.
Exploring the intersection of health and traditional culture, one of the activities created by UNAIR students in BBK International UMT was “LENTERA (Legacy of Natural Treatment & Remedies from Airlangga).” The activity was held on August 1, 2025, at the Universiti Malaysia Terengganu Convention Centre (UMTCC) and targeted students and lecturers from UMT as its audience. Through this initiative, the students aimed to introduce Indonesian traditional health products that work good for maintaining health conditions as well as serving as natural remedies. The activity consisted of two main agendas which are Jamu Workshop and Telonéa Workshop & Exhibition.
The first agenda, Jamu Workshop, was designed to give the audience an experience of how the Indonesian traditional herbal drink called jamu is being prepared through a live demonstration. Students from UNAIR also explained the history and health benefits of jamu to the audience beforehand. On this agenda, the audience is introduced to jamu sinom, one of the traditional types of jamu made from turmeric, and also jamu selaginella and rosella, which represent modern types of jamu. The audience also got the opportunity to be actively involved in the process of the jamu making and enjoy the taste of it. This agenda provided participants with a deeper understanding of how Indonesian traditional remedies are rooted in cultural heritage while still relevant for modern health practices.
After exploring jamu, the next agenda continued with the Telonéa Workshop & Exhibition. This agenda provided the audience with insights into Indonesian herbal products that serve health purposes. Students of UNAIR introduced Telonéa, an innovation of herbal telon oil that works to relieve muscle pain and provide warmth and relaxation. The audience got to practice processing Telonéa by mixing Virgin Coconut Oil, Fennel Oil, and Eucalyptus Oil hygienically. In addition to introducing Telonéa, students also showcased other traditional Indonesian health products in the exhibition called “HerbaFest.” The exhibition displayed a diverse range of products, including telon oil, herbal bar soap, aromatherapy candles, parem (herbal body balm), solid perfumes, and herbal powder.
Through the implementation of LENTERA, UNAIR students not only shared Indonesia’s heritage of traditional remedies but also promoted the importance of preventive healthcare utilizing herbal ingredients. This initiative reflects the value of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3: Good Health and Well Being, as traditional products are reintroduced to the community as a sustainable solution for maintaining healthier lifestyles. Beyond health benefits, the activity also embodies the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 17: Partnership for the Goals by strengthening collaboration between Universitas Airlangga and Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, fostering cross-cultural understanding of herbal products.
